Understanding the Safe and Sound Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a treatment that was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges for those who are suffering from stress and auditory sensitivity. This is a five-day auditory intervention program that’s designed to reduce these things while also helping to enhance social engagement and resilience.

The way in which this protocol works is that it makes improvements in your Social Engagement System. This is the system that’s triggered when your body receives signals of safety. When this happens your body puts the brakes on defensive strategies so that the parasympathetic system (the one that enables you to rest and digest) can work. Once it’s activated your physiological balance will shift so you can be both calm and alert (your sympathetic system of fight or flight will turn on) – states that are conducive to bonding, learning, digestion, and cell repair.
