The marvel, of course, is the GPS, or Global Positioning System, an interlinked constellation of up to 30 earth-orbiting satellites, originally developed and implemented in 1960 by the United States Department of Defence. In 1983 President Ronald Reagan issued a directive making GPS freely available for civilian use and it became operational in the same year. When people talk about a GPS, they usually mean a GPS receiver, or a Personal Navigation Device (PND).
